Avianca Pet Policy (2026): Fees, Carrier Size & Rules

Yes. Avianca allows dogs and cats in the cabin on domestic and international flights from $170 per pet, between North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The carrier must fit under the seat in front of you, up to 22 × 14 × 10 in (soft-sided). Your pet and carrier together can weigh up to 10 kg (≈ 22 lb).

How to add your dog to a booking

  1. Request pet transport at least 48 hours before departure, on avianca.com, through the Contact Center, at an agency or point of sale, or at the airport.
  2. Download Avianca's pet transportation form, fill it in and bring it printed to the airport (agents can also give you one at the counter).
  3. Bring your pet's vaccination card and a health certificate from a vet showing their professional registration number.

  • Avianca lists these as starting prices ("From"), taxes included, at points of sale, the contact center and travel agencies.
  • In high season (January, July for cabin pets, November and December) the fare can be up to USD 20 more.
  • Other starting prices: from COP 80,000 within Colombia, CAD 235 from Canada, EUR/GBP 220 from Europe.
  • Pets in the hold cost more, for example from USD 250 between North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Carrier size and weight

The weight limit is 10 kg (≈ 22 lb) including the carrier.

Flexible carrier (maximum)

22 × 14 × 10 in

≈ 56 × 36 × 25 cm (L × W × H)

  • The carrier must be a flexible kennel that fits under the seat in front of you, with room for your dog to stand, turn around and move naturally without touching the top or sides.
  • Pets must be at least 4 months old.
  • 1 carrier per passenger.

Where you can sit

  • No pets or emotional support dogs in Business Class on Avianca's 787
  • Two pets can't sit in the same row unless they belong to the same family group

Routes, breeds and other restrictions

Where pets can't fly

Avianca lists these exceptions:

  • United Kingdom: not available (pets can go as declared cargo through Avianca Cargo)
  • Galapagos Islands
  • Aruba and Curaçao: only for permanent relocation to the island, or pets already living there on a round trip
  • Venezuela: no pets in the cabin (service and emotional support animals excepted)

Breeds

Short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds are not accepted in cargo. Short-nosed dogs and cats (and their mixes) can travel only in the cabin, and you sign Avianca's Pet Transport in Cabin and Hold Form at the airport.

Also good to know

  • Minimum age is 4 months (2 months on domestic flights within Colombia).
  • You must request pet transport at least 48 hours before departure.
  • Pet transport may not be available on partner, codeshare or connecting flights with other airlines.
  • Some dog breeds (such as Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, Dogo Argentinos) can travel in the hold in a metal-walled kennel; check your destination's rules. Colombia bans importing Staffordshire Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers and their crosses.

Cargo and checked pets

Avianca carries pets in the cargo hold through pets in the hold. Pets up to 70 kg (154 lb) with their kennel can fly in the hold in a rigid kennel you supply (fiberglass, metal or plastic). Heavier pets go through Avianca Cargo. No hold pets on aircraft with a non-ventilated hold.

Service dogs and emotional support animals

  • Only trained service dogs are accepted as service animals.
  • Required paperwork: DOT Service Animal Transportation Form and Relief Attestation Form (U.S. routes); for emotional support dogs, a medical certificate from a mental health professional.

Other details

  • Unlike most airlines on this site, Avianca still accepts emotional support dogs as their own category, with a medical certificate from a mental health professional.
  • For tickets bought on or after July 31, 2026, you can travel with one service dog (unless the origin or destination country's laws allow more).
  • You can bring more than one pet: one in the cabin (up to 10 kg with the carrier) and the others in the hold.
  • Roosters can also fly, but only on domestic flights within Colombia.
