Yes. WestJet allows dogs and cats in the cabin on domestic and international flights for $50 each way, per kennel. The carrier must fit under the seat in front of you, up to 41 × 25.4 × 21.5 cm (soft-sided).

How to add your dog to a booking

  1. Request space for your pet as soon as you book, and at least 48 hours before departure, by chatting with a live agent or by phone. Pre-booking is the only way to guarantee a spot.
  2. Pay the kennel fee through the contact centre.
  3. On board, keep your pet in its kennel under the seat in front of you at all times.

Carrier size and weight

WestJet doesn't publish a weight limit for pets in the cabin. What matters is the carrier: your pet has to fit inside it, and it has to fit under the seat in front of you.

Soft-sided kennel (maximum)

41 × 25.4 × 21.5 cm

≈ 16.1 × 10 × 8.5 in (L × W × H)

  • The kennel must be soft-sided, airline-approved, leak-proof, secure and well ventilated, and your pet must be able to stand, sit, turn around and lie down in it. Duffle or gym bags aren't accepted.
  • The kennel counts as your personal item. UltraBasic guests on routes without a carry-on bag can bring the kennel in addition to their personal item.
  • Pets must be at least 8 weeks old.
  • The number of pets allowed on each flight depends on the aircraft.
  • 1 carrier per passenger, with one pet inside.

  • Depending on the aircraft, you may need a window seat
  • No pets in Business on the 787 Dreamliner

We haven't verified which routes, if any, don't accept pets on WestJet. Check the official page before you book.

Breeds

Short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds are not accepted in cargo. For bookings made after July 4, 2023, short-nosed (brachycephalic) cats and dogs and their mixes can't travel in the baggage compartment and must go through WestJet Cargo.

Also good to know

  • If a guest with a severe cat allergy is on your flight, you may be moved toward the back of the plane to create a buffer zone.
  • Removing your pet from its kennel on board can get you banned from flying with a pet in the cabin on future WestJet flights.

Cargo and checked pets

WestJet carries pets in the cargo hold through pets as checked baggage. Pet and hard-sided kennel up to 45 kg (100 lb), kennel up to 101 x 68 x 81 cm. Checked pet fees are $100 to $118 within Canada and the U.S., and $200 to $236 elsewhere. Pets traveling on their own go through WestJet Cargo.
