Volaris Pet Policy (2026): Fees, Carrier Size & Rules

Yes. Volaris allows dogs and cats in the cabin on domestic and international flights for up to $192 per pet, on international routes. The carrier must fit under the seat in front of you, up to 44 × 30 × 19 cm. Your pet and carrier together can weigh up to 26 lb (≈ 11.8 kg).

How to add your dog to a booking

  1. When booking, at the seat selection step, choose "Travel with your pet" and pick on board or checked. You can also add it later in My Trips, at the airport counter or through the Call Center.
  2. Fill out Volaris's pet travel form to speed up check-in.
  3. Arrive at the counter at least 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights with your pet's documents, and pay the fee there if you didn't pay online.

  • Volaris's fee list gives maximum prices ("up to"). Within Mexico it's up to MXN 1,650 in low season and MXN 1,900 in high season.
  • Pay online when you book, or at the airport counter.
  • A pet stroller is charged as extra baggage, unless it replaces a bag included in your fare and meets the size limits.

Carrier size and weight

The weight limit is 26 lb (≈ 11.8 kg) including the carrier. Volaris's older pet terms PDF says 10 kg (22 lb) instead. Confirm with Volaris if your pet and carrier weigh more than 22 lb.

  • The carrier can be fabric, rigid plastic or bubble, and your pet must be able to move inside it. It goes under the seat in front of you, and the rest of your bags go in the overhead bin.
  • Everything else you carry goes in the overhead bin.
  • Pets must be at least 8 weeks old on domestic flights, and dogs at least 6 months old on international flights.
  • Up to 16 pets are allowed per flight.
  • 1 carrier per passenger, with one pet inside.

Where you can sit

  • Dogs: any window seat except premium and emergency exit rows
  • Cats: last-row window seats only

Volaris's pet services aren't available on:

  • Frontier-operated flights (direct or connecting)

Breeds

Volaris's pet page says air travel isn't recommended for brachycephalic (short-nosed) or small breeds, and that you must sign a liability waiver at the counter to take one on board or checked. But its older pet terms PDF says brachycephalic dogs and cats shall not be transported in the cabin or checked. Confirm with Volaris before you book a short-nosed dog or cat.

Also good to know

  • Banned breeds (not in the cabin or checked): Pit Bull (all), Staffordshire and American Staffordshire Terriers, Shar Pei, Boxer, Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Akita Inu, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Anatolian Shepherd, Doberman, Rottweiler, Japanese Tosa, Dogue de Bordeaux, American Akita, Neapolitan Mastiff, Presa Canario, German Shepherd and Italian Mastiff.
  • Flights to or from Bogotá: at most 6 pets per flight (3 dogs, 3 cats).
  • Dogs flying into the U.S. must be at least 6 months old.
  • Dogs entering Mexico from the U.S. need a screwworm (GBG) inspection certificate from a USDA-accredited vet, issued within 5 days before travel.
  • Volaris's older terms PDF also gives different limits: minimum age 4 months, and only 2 pets in the cabin per flight.

Cargo and checked pets

Volaris carries pets in the cargo hold through checked pets ("pet in belly"). Pets and kennel up to 45 kg (100 lb) can fly checked, in a rigid, ventilated, wheel-free kennel no taller than 90 cm. Up to USD 190 on international routes.

    • Volaris's pet page and its older pet terms PDF disagree on the cabin weight limit (26 lb vs 10 kg), minimum age (8 weeks vs 4 months), pets per flight (16 vs 2 in the cabin) and short-nosed breeds. This page follows the pet page. Confirm with Volaris before you book.
    • Volaris recommends feeding and watering your pet four hours before the flight, and not sedating it.
